September 1, 2023. Get Outa Here, Covid - and Welcome, September!

You heard me - get out of town, Covid! I've been feeling sick since Sunday after church. Not super sick, but not great. It got continually worse, and then I felt like I was hit by a truck by Monday morning. When I noticed that my sense of smell was mostly gone, I realized it was probably covid. I could slightly smell the old jar of sauerkraut in our fridge, so that was the biggest giveaway to the possibility of covid vs. a cold. I felt like it could be a sinus infection. Sadly, I'm an old pro on those - tho' I was a bit worried...because of my sinus infection history, I generally need an antibiotic to take care of them. I don't have a doctor here and frankly, the medical care here scares me (thanks to our experiences with several missionaries and members). Anyway. I've been plowing through it. I had Elder Ridd run out on Monday to see if he could find any COVID tests, just in case. He went to about 6 stores and couldn't locate any. My cold got worse - including chills, a rash, sore throat, stuffiness, congestion, etc. I just basically did nothing for days. However, I started to feel better and finally we accessed some covid tests yesterday (Thursday). We found 2 tests in a chino; we also had friends drop us off 4 tests. Sadly the liquid 3 of those tests had dried up so we were glad we had the 2 that we found in the chino.

(Prior to our departure for Bonaire, we had had all the immunizations - I think we had at least 4 shots, which was mandatory).

Of course by this time, Brian felt pretty bad too. Turns out we both test positive. Guess all our vaccines (at least 4, including boosters) are history. On the positive note, I'm feeling a lot better from Sunday. Brian, on the other hand, is feeling much worse. And I will say that his rash is considerably more remarkable than mine was! He has quite the hives/rash going on. We are not sure if it is from medication or from Covid. Evidently it could be from either or from both.

We were both really tired. I'm not one to nap during the day ever - but I slept a lot that week.

The good news is that we both made it through fine; Brian had it much lighter than I did. Looked like 1/2 of our little branch had it too; which was a microcosm of the general population. I think there have been a lot of sickies here. We re-tested a week after our symptoms and positive tests and were all clear (covid negative).

We may have been slightly responsible for being Super Spreaders - we held a movie night at church the Thursday prior. We all got together at the church to watch The Greatest Showman - one of Brian's all-time fav movies. We had hot dogs, chips, popcorn, candy (Twizzlers!) and drinks, and we all had a super time. I don't think anyone had seen the movie before. We watched it in English, with Spanish subtitles. And then the next week, many of us were sick. Woops!

I am thankful for good health! It is such a blessing that I often take for granted.
